Comparing pay on equal terms

Job offers, contracts and freelance quotes are often given in different units. Converting them to the same period, usually hourly or yearly, is the only fair way to compare. Adjust the hours and weeks to match the real working pattern: a 37.5-hour week with four unpaid weeks off changes the hourly figure noticeably.

Formulas

  • Hours per year = hours per day × days per week × weeks per year
  • Hourly = yearly ÷ hours per year
  • Monthly = yearly ÷ 12

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by the hours worked in a year. With a standard 40-hour week and 52 weeks, that is 2,080 hours, so 52,000 a year is 25 an hour.

How do I convert hourly pay to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week and weeks per year. 20 an hour for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is 41,600 a year.

How is monthly pay calculated?

Yearly pay divided by 12, because months have different numbers of days. That is why monthly pay is more than four times weekly pay.

Should I include paid holidays?

For an employee with paid leave, use 52 weeks, since holidays are paid. If you are not paid for time off, as with most freelancers and hourly workers, enter only the weeks you actually work.
