Adding and removing tax correctly

Adding tax is simple multiplication. Removing it trips people up: you can't subtract the rate from the gross price, because the tax was calculated on the smaller net amount. This calculator does both properly, with exact decimal maths, so totals always add up.

Formulas

  • Gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
  • Tax = net × rate ÷ 100
  • Net from gross = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Common rates

Rates vary by country and product: for example, 20% standard VAT in the UK, 19% in Germany, 18% GST in India, 10% GST in Australia and 5% VAT in the UAE. Check your tax authority for reduced rates and exemptions.

Billing a customer? The invoice generator applies tax per line and shows it separately on the PDF.

Selling at a profit? Work out your margin before tax with the profit margin calculator, and give customers a proper payment receipt showing the tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the VAT rate. At 20%, a net price of 100 becomes 100 × 1.20 = 120, of which 20 is VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate, not multiply by the rate. At 20%, 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net and 20 VAT. Taking 20% off 120 would give 96, which is wrong.

Does this work for GST and sales tax?

Yes. VAT, GST and sales tax are calculated the same way; only the name and rate differ. Switch the label to GST or Sales tax and enter your local rate.

Why is my reverse VAT a cent off?

Amounts are rounded to cents. When tax is removed from a gross amount, the net and the tax are each rounded, so they always add back to the exact gross you entered.
