What is markup?

Markup is the amount added to a product's cost to set its selling price, written as a percentage of the cost. It is the most common way shops, wholesalers and tradespeople price goods: take the cost, add a standard markup, and the price follows.

Markup formulas

  • Selling price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100)
  • Markup % = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100
  • Margin % = markup ÷ (1 + markup)

Markup vs margin

Markup is measured against cost; margin against price. The same sale always shows a bigger markup than margin. When targets are set as margins, for example by an investor or a franchise, use the profit margin calculator to price directly from the margin.

To see how many units you must sell at your marked-up price, use the break-even calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate markup?

Markup is profit divided by cost, times 100. If an item costs 40 and sells for 60, the profit is 20 and the markup is 20 ÷ 40 = 50%.

How do I add a markup to a cost?

Multiply the cost by 1 plus the markup. A 35% markup on a cost of 80 gives 80 × 1.35 = 108.

How do I convert margin to markup?

Markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin). A 25% margin needs a 33.33% markup. Use the “Margin → markup” mode to convert any value.

Is a 100% markup the same as a 100% margin?

No. A 100% markup doubles the cost (cost 50, price 100) and gives a 50% margin. A 100% margin is impossible, because it would mean the item cost nothing.
